The Godavari Bank Challa Project, value at approximately Rs 80,000 crores is of immense significance to the development of Andhra Pradesh…unfortunately, there have been disturbing reports that the project is being pursued with potential involvement of entities and individuals who have a questionable track record. One such entity, Mr. Mega Krishna Reddy, who was allegedly involved in irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Project in Telangana, has been actively lobbying for the contract. The CAG report on the Kaleshwaram Project highlighted significant financial mismanagement, including alleged mishandling of Rs 48,000 crores’. These excerpts are from a four-page letter written by Dr. K.A Paul, President of Praja Shanthi Party and Founder of Global Peace Initiative, to the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu on 18 January. He warned the state government from awarding the project to Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), citing its bad track record on the completion of projects.

The Godavari Bank Challa Project aimed at transforming the state’s agricultural landscape, has been marred by corrupt practices that threatens state’s economic stability and public trust, said Dr. Paul who has vowed to fight against corruption despite the risks. Dr. Paul threatened to go on a hunger strike outside Pawan Kalyan’s residence if his demands are not met.

In the letter, Dr. Paul made several serious allegations against MEIL. He said, ‘Reports indicate that Mr. Mega Krishna Reddy has allegedly funneled illicit funds through electoral bonds, with Rs 44 crore purportedly allocated to your Telugu Desam Party and Mr. Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party. These actions undermine the democratic fabric of the state and violate the constitutional duty to uphold transparency and integrity. Valued at approximately Rs 80,000 crore, this project (Godavari Bank Challa Project) holds immense significance for Andhra Pradesh. However, awarding it to individuals like Mr. Mega Krishna Reddy, implicated in corrupt practices such as the Kaleshwaram project mismanagement (as per the CAG report) could lead to further economic harm.

Dr. Paul pointed out that corporate entities like Mr. Mega Krishna Reddy and Mr. Adani are already ‘implicated in economic exploitation’ and ‘reportedly making efforts to influence key stakeholders to secure lucrative projects’. He further warned saying that the government should refrain from sinning the Godavari Bank Challa Project or any similar deals with Mr. Mega Krishna Reddy of his affiliates during the upcoming Economic Summit in Davos. To initiate ‘an independent inquiry into the allegation of mismanagement, electoral bond misuse, and kickbacks involving Mr. Krishna Reddy and his associates’.
